What a Chimney Sweep Actually Does
Every fire leaves a deposit behind. Soot settles as a fine black powder, and creosote — the tar-like residue of unburned wood gas — hardens onto the flue walls in layers. Left alone it narrows the flue, chokes the draft and becomes the fuel for a chimney fire.
A chimney sweep removes it. We work the whole system, not just the part you can see with a flashlight: firebox, damper, smoke shelf, smoke chamber and the full length of the flue, from the hearth up to the cap.
- Firebox and grate swept clean
- Damper and smoke shelf cleared of debris
- Smoke chamber scraped and brushed
- Full flue length swept from top to bottom
- Cap and spark screen checked for blockage
How We Sweep a Chimney
Cover and seal
Drop cloths go over the hearth and floor and the fireplace opening is sealed, so nothing escapes into the room while we work.
Inspect first
We look at the firebox, damper, smoke chamber and flue before brushing, so we know what we are dealing with — and so do you.
Brush and vacuum
Rotary brushes and rods work the full flue while a vacuum runs the entire time, pulling soot out at the source instead of into your living room.
Show and clear
We show you the result, pack our equipment out and tell you plainly if the chimney needs anything beyond the sweep.
When to Book a Chimney Sweep
Once a year is the baseline for any fireplace in regular use. Beyond that, the chimney usually tells you when it is due — you just have to know what to listen for.
- Smoke drifts back into the room instead of drawing up
- A smoky smell hangs around the fireplace on warm or humid days
- You can see black, flaky or shiny tar-like creosote on the walls
- Fires are hard to start or burn low and lazy
- Birds, nests, leaves or scratching sounds inside the chimney
- The damper sticks or will not close properly
- It has been over a year since the last sweep or inspection
Chimney Sweeping in Los Angeles
Los Angeles fireplaces get used in bursts. A handful of cold nights in December, a few more in February, then nothing for months. That pattern is exactly what makes an annual chimney sweep worth doing here: the flue sits idle and damp for most of the year, and whatever the last fires left behind has plenty of time to harden, corrode and attract wildlife.
Creosote is the real reason to sweep
Creosote forms whenever wood smoke cools before it leaves the flue. It starts as a light, flaky soot, then builds into a crusty layer, and in its worst stage becomes a hard, glazed coating that will not brush off easily. Every stage is flammable, and the further it goes the more difficult and expensive it is to deal with. Sweeping once a year keeps it in the first stage, where a brush handles it.
A sweep is not the same as a repair
Sweeping cleans; it does not fix. If we find a cracked crown, a rusted-through cap, damaged flashing or crumbling mortar during the sweep, we show you and quote it separately. Nothing gets added to the job without you seeing the problem first.
What it costs
The price depends on the chimney — its height, its condition and how long it has been since the last sweep. A single-story masonry fireplace and a two-story flue caked with glazed creosote are not the same job. That is why the estimate is free and given on site, after the technician has actually looked.

Chimney Sweep Los Angeles — FAQ
Once a year for any fireplace in regular use. If you burn several times a week through the winter, or you burn softwood, it can need attention sooner. A chimney that has sat unused for years should be inspected before the first fire — that is usually where we find nests and debris.
Most standard sweeps take around an hour. Heavy creosote, a blocked flue or a two-story chimney can take longer, and we tell you before we continue if the job turns out to be bigger than a standard sweep.
No. Drop cloths go down, the fireplace opening gets sealed, and a vacuum runs the whole time. Keeping the soot out of your room is part of the job, not an add-on.
Just make sure there has been no fire for at least 24 hours and clear a path to the fireplace. If you have valuables or rugs nearby, moving them is helpful but we bring our own coverings either way.
Yes. Prefab and metal-flue fireplaces need a different approach than masonry, and they still collect debris and corrode. Tell us what you have when you call and we will bring the right equipment.
Yes — Los Angeles and Los Angeles County, seven days a week, including weekends and evening appointments.
